Beta version
For teachers paid by a school or company in mainland China. See the tax that should be taken from each month's salary, and whether you'll owe or get money back at the annual reconciliation
- Everything you type stays on your device. Nothing is sent to us.
- An estimate, not tax advice.
1 Contract and pay
2 Days in China
Residency is worked out for each calendar year: 183 full days or more in China makes you a resident for tax that year. The day you arrive and the day you leave do not count.
3 Deductions
In a year when you are a resident, a foreign teacher uses either the special additional deductions or the tax-free foreign allowances, not both, and cannot switch during the year.
Only the part above 15,000 counts, up to 80,000, and only at the annual reconciliation.
Only counts if your school pays it as a reimbursement against official invoices (发票) and reports it as tax-free. An allowance simply added to your salary is taxed as salary. Enter monthly amounts that are already included in your gross salary.
For example qualifying commercial health insurance. Only counted at the annual reconciliation.
4 Earlier income this year (optional)
Pay from an employer before this contract, in the same calendar year. Choose the year and the income type
Optional: type the tax on your payslip in the last column. Differences above ¥1 are highlighted.
Some months on your payslip are different from our estimate. Ask your school how they calculated it, or book a consultation.
Weighing up an offer?
These figures are an estimate. Your payslip can differ. Before you sign, get a second pair of eyes on the offer: pay, housing, flights, deductions, the things that cost you later.

1 Tax year
Find the figures in the Choose the year and the income type
2 Employers that year
3 Bonus and other income (optional)
For example paid tutoring or freelance work. It counts at 80% of the gross.
4 Deductions for the year (optional)
Include any you did not claim through your employer. For example, supporting elderly parents shared with siblings: 1,500 × 12 = 18,000. Leave empty if you used tax-free foreign allowances that year.
Payslip doesn't add up?
Deductions you can't explain are a red flag. Deal with it early, before the year closes and the paperwork disappears.
